Far-right Republican Party secure victory in presidential election

(MENAFN) Far-right Republican Party contender Jose Antonio Kast achieved a decisive win in Chile’s presidential runoff held on Sunday, soundly defeating his left-wing rival, Jeannette Jara, and securing the presidency by a wide margin.

With most ballots counted, Kast captured 58.17% of the vote, compared with 41.83% for Jara, a member of the Communist Party and a former labor minister. Jara acknowledged the outcome soon after early results were released, stating that “democracy spoke loud and clear.”

In a message shared publicly, she confirmed reaching out to her opponent, writing, "I just spoke with President-elect Jose Antonio Kast to wish him success for the good of Chile," and added, "To those who supported us and were inspired by our candidacy, rest assured that we will continue working to build a better life in our country. Together and standing strong, as we always have."

The outcome represents a major turnaround for Kast, who finished second in the initial round of voting on Nov. 16. Although Jara had led the first round with 27% compared to Kast’s 24%, he went on to consolidate support from other right-leaning candidates, whose combined vote share significantly outweighed that of the left.

Jara’s bid was further weakened by public dissatisfaction with the current administration. The low approval ratings of President Gabriel Boric’s government, which is part of her ruling coalition, weighed heavily on her campaign.

Kast, an ultraconservative lawyer and former legislator, ran on a tough law-and-order agenda, calling for an “iron fist” approach to restoring security. He is a devout Catholic, outspoken in his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage, and has previously expressed admiration for former military ruler Augusto Pinochet.

Polling data indicated that concerns over public safety played a decisive role in the election, overtaking economic conditions, health care, and education as the most pressing issue for voters nationwide.
